KANSAS ORGANIZATION OF RECYCLERS
Strategic Plan for 2010

The Board of Directors of the Kansas Organization of Recyclers (KOR) has adopted this plan to set direction for how KOR will most effectively carry out its mission, add value for its members and contribute to the public interest.

Mission

Kansas Organization of Recyclers is a non-profit (501c3), membership based network of representatives from government, industry, non-profit and public entities and individuals that support environmental stewardship through waste reduction, composting, reuse, recycling, and sustainable efforts in Kansas. KOR provides advocacy, information, technical support, networking and educational opportunities in partnership with local, state, regional and national organizations.

2010 and beyond

The Board’s vision or preferred future for KOR includes the following descriptors:

•Dynamic, expanding and engaged membership drawn from public and private sectors
o Strong partnerships with groups that have similar mission
o “Green” organizations important source of passion and energy
o Partnerships with similar organizations in surrounding states in Midwest

• Independent and self sufficient organization
o Financial stability includes reserve fund
o Fee-based services and membership dues have expanded
o Significantly less dependence on public funds
o Priorities driven by KOR and its members’ needs

• Reputation in industry and government as a “go-to” organization
o Provides leadership in advocating for recycling and defining industry standards for excellence
o Confers “seal of approval” designation
o Contributes to creation of Internet based recycling markets
o Valued as information source for government decision makers, including Kansas Legislature

• Contributes value-added services for members
o Problem solver and information broker
o Clearinghouse for education materials
o Links product collectors and product recyclers for mutual benefit
o Annual conference that provides networking and education opportunities
o In cooperation with partners, convenes a biennial regional conference and trade show
o Employs three staff to support member services and public education

• Demonstrates effective governance and organizational management
o Competitive board member elections occur
o Board members focus effectively on governance responsibilities and also volunteer additional time to assist with programs and services (working board)
o Board employs effective committee structure to perform duties
o Three staff, including Executive Director, support member services, public education and other Board-delegated duties
